Being his club's sole representative amid 950 kids and in conditions a world away from his Dunedin home beach didn't faze Ossian Woods.
A lone entrant from south Dunedin's Brighton surf club, Woods lapped up the sub-tropical conditions at the Ocean Athlete under-14 championships to compete in the final in his opening event, the under-13 run-swim-run.
Alongside the mixed beach relay and beach flags competitions, the run-swim-run races saw the Mount's main beach packed with fit youngsters from 40 clubs nationwide, and a throng of parents and supporters. The 1m-1m swell offered plenty to test the country's top young surf lifesaving talent.
Talking to the Bay Times before competition kicked off, Woods was buzzing with the summery atmosphere at his first North Island carnival.
