ND to look pretty in pink

French rugby side Stade Francais do it - apparently at the behest of flamboyant club president Max Guazzini - and Carl Hayman's Newcastle Falcons have also been known to have a dabble.

Now the Northern Knights too will look pretty in pink after revealing yesterday they'll play their domestic Twenty20 cricket in pink uniforms this summer, supporting the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

ND chief executive David Cooper said the change of uniform, from Northern's traditional maroon and gold, had been well-received by players.

Captain James Marshall (pictured) said his players would wear the vivid pink uniform with pride, "hoping somewhere and sometime our support will make a difference to someone's life".

To support their official charity, the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, the Northern Knights have moved away from their traditional maroon and gold uniform and will wear bright pink for the Twenty20 competition.

Marshall was expecting "a bit of grief" from the opposition teams about wearing pink, but the cause far outweighed any taunts.

Middlesex, in English county cricket, wore pink in the Twenty20 competition a couple of years ago and won it, so the portents might be good.

The Twenty20 competition runs for just over three weeks in January, with Tauranga's Bay Oval hosting games on January 2, 3 and 15, bolstered by Sri Lankan star batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan.
