Capp strikes gold sets national record

Otumoetai College Nathan Capp had an outstanding national spring swimming championship, winning gold in the 1500m freestyle and the 200m and 400m individual medleys. His time of 4:25.14 in the 400m medley  was a new national age group record.

A bronze in the 200m and 400m freestyle rounded out a successful meet for this promising swimmer.

Brittany Goodrick won a silver in the 800m freestyle.

Rueben Gillard and Ben O'Dea were part of the historical win against Australia in the national under-19 volleyball test match series during the holidays.

Ben was outstanding and became the go-to man for  the team. This was the first series win against Australia in eight years of fierce competition.

Sam Davis, who now plays off a 1.4 handicap, had a great tournament representing the Bay under-19 golf team in Cambridge over the holidays. Craig Hamilton was also part of this team who were runners up.

Bradley Shaw continues to impress with his handicap down to 10, winning the under-19 nett section of the Omanu Classic last weekend.

Kurt Christophersen, Tukuora Ngawhika and Aiden Ross have been selected for the BOP under-14 high performance rugby camp.

Jayden Carr was third in the national secondary schools under-50kg judo champs and Brandon Westnedge won gold at the NZ Gymsports championship in Hamilton for his floor routine and Level 7 men's artistic apparatus.

Tauranga Boys College The term three holidays proved to be a successful break for many  athletes. In the national schools judo champs Jonathon Hodges placed first in the U45kg division and Kade Turner won the U66kg division.

Our combined under-18/19 rowing eight also tasted success, winning the annual Great Race on the Waikato River.

Our multisport teams were  in action at the Motu challenge in Opotiki. Unfortunately neither team could take the main prize, however the two teams  gained second and third,  with Simon Binney, Michael Sutton, Jayden Moorhouse and Ben Gibb finishing the 170km course in just over eight hours.

Alex Reed also had a successful holiday, winning silver in the national junior indoor bowls championships. He also managed to pick up third in the schools champs, and with Andrew Barbour picked up a bronze in the pairs.

Nicholas Tomsett and Cameron Higgins have booked a spot in the national lawn bowls championships after winning the Zone 2 championship.

Our senior A basketball team also competed in the national schools championships. After three solid wins they came up against Mana College in a must-win game, losing 72-69 to miss the top eight. However we picked ourselves up to win two out of our remaining three games, to finish 11th with five wins and three losses.

Aquinas CollegeNot all Aquinas College rugby and netball players have hung up their boots for the season.

Rugby and netball competition is still alive at Aquinas this week, as the college hosts teams from Tamworth McCarthy Catholic College in New South Wales.

A total of 28 Australian students are visiting Aquinas for two days to battle it out on the rugby field and netball courts.

The school has brought one rugby team, and two netball teams.

It is an on-going challenge with McCarthy College visiting Aquinas every two years.

Mount Maunganui College Head Boy Luke van Veen competed in the New Zealand under-21 timber sport team in a test series against Australia.

The nine-man team competed three times, with NZ taking the series 2-1. Luke had some great individual results with three first places and two seconds.

Lewis Hart competed in the 25km mountain bike race at the N-Duro event at the Redwoods, Rotorua, winning the under-16 division, six minutes in front of second and fourth overall.

The NZ secondary schools judo champs were held in the holidays with Chanel Kavanagh taking gold in the girls' under-52kkg division.

Tom Jackson was selected from the Western Bay under-15 rugby team to attend a two-day camp in the holidays to select a Bay of Plenty team, getting in from 40 triallists. Clayton Williams has also been selected for the under-14 rugby trial,

Danny Kayes was awarded most outstanding player in the under-18 waterpolo championships held in Auckland, with his Tauranga team finishing second.

At the surf lifesaving pool champs in Wellington, Bex Parkes was second in the under-16 50m swim with fins and Simone Couvee second in under-16 mannequin  tow with fins.

Te Puke High On Tuesday evening, our school held its annual sport awards ceremony at The Orchard auditorium.  Sports leaders Nikki Parry and Kirk Walker were the masters of ceremony, with All Black Tanerau Latimer invited as the special guest presenter.

The major awards presented were: Year 9 sportsperson: Courtney Bragg. Year 10 sportsperson: Natalie Peat. Most Enthusiastic sportsperson: Sonya Litchfield. Commitment to Sport: Lauren Boyd. Sportswoman of the Year: Janey Holland. Sportsman of the Year: Mark Crawford. Whana Barton Memorial: Natalie Peat. Team of the Year: Girls squash team, NZ secondary schools champions.
