Bay of Plenty paddlers reigned again as the titles were decided in New Zealand's biggest extreme kayaking race on Saturday.

Rotorua's Bradley Lauder  sneaked past Tauranga's Jared Meehan in one of the closest finals in the 12-year history of the Wairoa Extreme, continuing the intriguing shut-out of international paddlers in the race.

It was an event which had everything in the stunning gorge deep in the Wairoa River, near Tauranga.

The qualifying time trial was won in a record time and the top-64 head-to-head shootout showed no mercy to race favourites or previous winners.
