A Zumba party designed to become the biggest of its kind in New Zealand might have only just missed out on breaking the record.
Zumba is a dance-fitness craze and Tauranga has the strongest following in the country with more classes than any other city based on population.
Saturday night's event was an attempt to beat Christchurch's record setting 600-strong Zumba party.
A rough headcount early on in the night indicated it would be a close call.
"It went really well," said Leisure programme manager Robyn King.
"It was a good turn out. We had well over 500 people, close to 600, but we are not sure. We might have missed out on the record by about 14 people."
Mrs King would be counting the tickets this afternoon to find out for sure.
The crowd was mostly female, although a "men's lounge" hosted about 30 blokes watching the rugby.
"Everybody had an absolute ball. It was fantastic, just seeing so many people Zumba-ing together."
