A 62-year-old woman had to be winched off Mauao by helicopter after collapsing on her way to the summit.

TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter base manager Liam Brettkelly said the Papatoetoe woman, who was walking with family, collapsed half way up the track about 1pm. She was treated by St John ambulance staff at the scene before being winched into the rescue helicopter using the Port of Tauranga rescue winch.

Mr Brettkelly said the rescue took about 18 minutes and the ill woman was flown to Tauranga Hospital in a moderate condition.

The reason for her collapse was unclear.
