High winds blew apart a marquee used for some of the Western Bay's biggest summer gigs just days after the summer line-up finished.

Waihi Beach fire chief Ian Smith said the fire brigade were called to the Waihi Beach Hotel at 5.17pm yesterday.

"The large marquee where all the bands have been playing was absolutely destroyed by the high winds," he said. "Over the time we were there the whole tent was destroyed. The last band had already played. They were due to pick it up today."

Mr Smith said two fire crewsa were called out to try to catch the poles which were being blown around.

The last of the Summer Festival concerts was held at the hotel on Saturday.
