A 23-year-old woman injured her ankle after jumping off a wharf on to sand near the Kaituna River mouth at Paengaroa about 9.45am on Saturday.

Maketu Volunteer Fire Brigade went to the scene and the woman was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance and taken to Tauranga Hospital for an x-ray.

Fire chief Shane Beech said it appeared the woman's ankle may have been sprained after she landed awkwardly from the 2-3m jump.
