Whangamata School fire still unexplained

The joint Waikato Police and Fire Service investigation into a blaze that seriously damaged a workshop at a Coromandel school is continuing with no clear cause identified.

Detective Sergeant Martyn Hughes of the Thames-Coromandel CIB said investigators had been at the Whangamata Area School all day working to establish what caused the blaze that started about 10am yesterday.

"To date no accelerant has been identified and there is nothing to suggest the fire was malicious however the investigation will continue to be treated as an unexplained fire until such time as we have information that determines what has occurred."
