Police have released the name of a man whose body was found on a Waikato railway track on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson of the Waipa CIB said Michael Ohutu, 19, was found on the main trunk railway line near Pokuru, south of Te Awamutu, early on Saturday morning.

"Mr Ohutu's body had suffered injuries consistent with being struck by a train but at this point his death, which has been reported to the Coroner, remains unexplained," Patterson said.

"This matter will be the subject of a number of forensic examinations, the results of which may take some time to complete."
