After 58 years standing like a rock on the stern of a surf boat, it takes a lot to throw Dan Harris off his stride.

The 72-year-old Waihi Beach surf lifesaving stalwart allowed his leathery facade to crease into a grin on Saturday after steering his women's surf boat crew to victory, then headed off in the direction of the clubrooms to sate his thirst.

He had a lot to celebrate, if truth be known. The North Island championships his club was hosting, turned into the biggest surf boat carnival in New Zealand history. A record 73 crews showed up for a stunning weekend of competitive racing.
