A portable ice skating rink has been set up on Tauranga's waterfront and is due to open today.

The 35m by 15m ice rink will operate in the northern waterfront carpark over the Christmas and New Year period.

Ice World managing director Gareth Webber said children can skate on the rink for $15 and adults for $20, although discounts and family passes were available on the company's website.

The portable rink has been in Rotorua and Hamilton this year and has attracted between 20,000 to 30,000 people, Mr Webber said.

The rink will run from 9am to 10pm daily. Ice World shift manager Matt Beazley puts the finishing touches to a portable ice-skating rink.
