Territorials battle for Harding Cup

Territorial soldiers from throughout the North Island gather in Tauranga this weekend for the 2010 Harding Cup inter-unit sports challenge.

Hosted by locally based 6 Hauraki Battalion Group the competition also involves 3 (Auckland/Northland), 5 (East Coast) and 7 (Wellington/West Coast) Battalion Groups with upwards of 200 soldiers taking part in total.

The competition takes place over three events starting with a teams' ironman contest over a course up and down Mauao at dawn on Saturday.

That will be followed by a rugby tournament based at Judea Marae, and a golf tournament.

The Harding Cup, which started life as an indirect challenge rugby trophy between Territorial units, goes to the battalion group scoring most points overall for the weekend.

The visiting troops are being hosted at Judea Marae.
