Te Puna in historic Rose Bowl challenge

It's taken more than 80 years but Te Puna will finally get a challenge for the historic Ratana Maramatanga Rose Bowl trophy tomorrow.

They'll play holders Rangataua at Te Ariki Park in the first of three challenges over the next three Saturdays.

Te Puna president Mick Bidois was delighted his club had been accepted as a challenger. Although more Catholic-affiliated, Te Puna still has links with the Ratana movement and their home ground - Maramatanga Park - takes its name from the trophy.

"It's an honour for us to get the first challenge so we'll certainly be taking it pretty seriously," Bidois said.

The Rose Bowl has been played for between North Island Maori clubs since the 1930s and has spent the past few decades in the Bay of Plenty region.

Rangiuru, who held the trophy for a decade until 2005, have the second challenge next week, while Judea - who took it off Rangiuru that year - have the last one in a fortnight.

Rangataua was the first Bay of Plenty team to win the trophy in 1951 when they beat the Ratana side from Wanganui. Tomorrow's match starts at 2.30pm.

Four Bay of Plenty representative teams are in action tomorrow in the Northern Region competition.

The Bay Development team, after a 46-26 loss to North Harbour on Sunday, head north to Whangarei to play Northland.

The Bay of Plenty under-20 side also have an away match against Northland, although in order to reduce the travel, that match is being played in Auckland.

The Bay of Plenty under-18 team is the only side with a home game, facing Auckland B at Blake Park at 12.30pm, while the Bay of Plenty under-16s play Thames Valley in Paeroa.

Draw:

BOP Development v Northland, Whangarei

BOP Under 20 v Northland, Pakuranga - 2.30pm

BOP Under 18 v Auckland B, Blake Park Mount Maunganui - 12.30pm

BOP Under 16 v Thames Valley, Paeroa - 12.30pm
