The founder of Tauranga-based crane hire company McLeod Cranes Ian (Curly) McLeod died on Monday aged 66 after a long battle with cancer.

Regarded as a legend in the industry, he founded the highly successful family-run company in 1995, serving as owner and then managing director.

A tribute on the company website said "We at McLeod Cranes will miss his humour, his approach and mostly his incredible wealth of knowledge. He was an inspiration, never afraid to get stuck in and make it happen."

Mr McLeod's funeral will be held on Saturday at the Lion Foundation Centre, TECT Arena, Baypark at 3pm. The family has asked for bright and casual dress.
