Tauranga City Council has canned the idea of a targeted rate for Merivale to help fund the suburb's community centre.

Mayor Stuart Crosby said it was counter-productive to ask the large number of struggling families to pay even more.

The proposal came from the Merivale Community Centre that wanted more certainty of funding.

But its preliminary consultation drew 96 responses, of which 86 opposed a targeted rate.
