Students excel in boosting foodbank appeal

Students at Glenholme School have donated a whopping 424 items of food to The Daily Post Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army foodbank.

Principal Nancy Macfarlane said they held a mufti day on Wednesday in exchange for an item of food. Some of the
children even donated more than one item.

Ms Macfarlane said the Salvation Army did a fantastic job and holding the mufti day was a "nice way to finish off the year''.

Meanwhile, Owhata School's bilingual unit has been studying about koha and students from the unit as well as others from the school have donated 70 items of food to the appeal as part of their studies.

Whaia Callie Raureti said the students organised a Koha Day this week where children could donate items of
food to the appeal. Students created posters to put up around the school to promote the day.

"It was the kids who came up with the idea of giving to other kids who don't have things at Christmas.''

Captain Amanda Martin of Rotorua's Salvation Army also spoke to the children about what the Salvation Army
does with its foodbank and the students were able to understand the difference they had made for someone else, Whaia Raureti said.

Meanwhile, donations to The Daily Post Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army foodbank can  be made at our Hinemoa St office between 8am and 5pm on weekdays. People can donate money or non-perishable food.

Food donations can also be made at the Salvation Army's Community Ministries at Community House on Haupapa St in the city centre.
