Speed, alcohol blamed as car flips in Kaimais

Speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors in a car crash in the Lower Kaimais yesterday afternoon, police say.

Two women were taken to Tauranga Hospital after their car rolled multiple times after the driver lost control on Poripori Rd at about 2.15pm.

Police Senior Constable Bruce Gordon said the women were heading up Poripori Rd towards State Highway 29 when the car rolled.

"I would say it's rolled at least three times.

"That's quite impressive uphill," he said.

The car appeared to have travelled about 50m further up the road after it flipped.

The vehicle came to rest right way up facing into a bank with the contents of the car strewn throughout the grass.

Mr Gordon said he believed speed and alcohol were factors.

He said the pair were lucky to have received only scrapes and bruises.

Mount Maunganui St John operations team manager Gary Bishell said both occupants of the car escaped with minor injuries.

He said a 23-year-old Te Puke woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries and a 40-year-old local woman was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
