Updated 5.34pm:

A large fire in Papamoa has been extinguished but the garage and a small flat have been gutted.

Emergency services were called to the Tara Rd fire just before 1pm today.

The residents were burning rubbish in steel drums when the wind caused the fence beside the garage to catch on fire. The fire quickly engulfed the garage and made its way into the adjoining flat.

Three fire trucks and 12 firefighters battled the blaze.
