Fatal crash at Pongakawa

UPDATED 3.48pm: One person has been confirmed dead after a head-on collision between a truck and car at Pongakawa.

Another person remains trapped in a vehicle with serious injuries on State Highway 2, near Pongakawa School Rd.

The collision involved a heavy truck and car described as a hot rod.

Diversions are in place as emergency services work at the scene.

Head of Western Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said a rescue helicopter had been dispatched.

Emergency services are heading to a serious crash between a hot rod and a truck at Pongakawa.

It is understood there are two people trapped after the head-on collision on Te Puke East Rd.

Diversions are being set up.
