Statistics New Zealand are looking for hundreds of people to help in the 2013 Census.

Statistics NZ launched its recruitment drive today with a hunt for 440 district supervisors around New Zealand.

Twenty two district supervisors will be needed for the Tauranga and Coromandel areas.

2013 Census general manager, Carol Slappendel, said the successful recruitment of the district supervisor role was key to the overall success of the census.

"The next census will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. It will involve the delivery and collection of census forms for an estimated 4.6 million people and 1.8 million dwellings,'' she said.

Around 7,000 census collectors will personally deliver forms to every household before census day and promote completing census forms online.

"We need a big team of district supervisors to recruit and manage the thousands of collectors who will be delivering Internet Access Codes and census forms to all homes in New Zealand,'' she said.

Successful applicants will receive extensive training and will be in the field from December.

Vacancies for district supervisor roles will close on September 16.

Recruitment for more than 7,000 collectors will begin in December.
