Seal chills out in Greerton

A seal was wandering around Greerton Park near the Waimapu Stream yesterday.  The seal was first reported around 8am but spent most of the day at the park.

"It was going down Oropi Road from Greerton, at the big corner before the Greerton park, on the footpath heading to the Polytechnic", said Marc McAllister who took a suite of photographs.

"The man lying on ground taking photo is Keith Maynard from Hamilton. He commented that they don't see this kind of thing happen in Hamilton!"

According to wildlife experts, seal sightings are set to become more common in the Bay of Plenty as numbers expand.

This winter DoC's Tauranga office has received daily reports of animals resting on local beaches and in the harbour.

DoC rangers advised people not to get too close when they spot a seal.

"It is a wild animal and they do carry diseases and will give off a nasty bite if threatened."

"They also don't particularly like dogs yapping close to them so please keep your dogs on a lead and a few metres away from the seal."
