Schools call for police

Tauranga Police are investigating incidents at two Western Bay schools.

Both the schools and emergency services have revealed little details about the incidents.

Emergency services were called to Bethlehem College yesterday about 11am.

Principal Eoin Crosbie said emergency services were called because two students were unwell and acting strangely during school hours.

He said he could not comment further because the school was still investigating the incident and speaking with the family to "ascertain what happened".

Tauranga Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross confirmed police were called to the school on Wednesday.

He said an ambulance was called to the school and the police went to assist.

A St John ambulance officer who visited the school said the incident was of a "personal nature".

"It's some kind of family thing and I do not wish to comment further."

Meanwhile, police are also looking into an incident at Te Puke High school on Wednesday.

A parent told the Bay of Plenty Times she was shocked when her son told her of the incident.

"I don't suppose teachers know kids are carrying this stuff to school. And I don't know how they can govern searches and have metal detectors at school, and you can't stop kids bringing these things in, and I guess you don't know until something like this happens."

School principal Alan Liddle confirmed there was an incident at the school yesterday but said it wasn't a fight.

"Something has happened and we're investigating so we can understand what happened," he said. "It's something that has come into the school and we're acting on this but we don't have a huge amount of information.

"We're going through the normal procedures and are investigating the incident."

Mr Liddle said there was a weapon involved but would not confirm if it was a knife.

He was not sure of the age of the students involved.

Police were not called to the school yesterday but Te Puke Senior Sergeant Deirdre Lack said police were conducting follow up investigations.

This incident comes nearly two years after a Te Puke High School maths teacher was stabbed by a student.

In May 2010, a 13-year-old student stabbed maths teacher Steven Hose four times in the back of the neck and shoulder.

Mr Hose was taken to Tauranga Hospital and discharged shortly after.
