Dame Susan Devoy handed over a $150,000 cheque to the proprietors of Tauranga Rudolf Steiner School and Kindergarten yesterday.

The funding for the recently completed School and Community Hall was awarded under TECT's Community Amenities Grant.

The whare, as the hall is known, started its life as the Kokiri Carving Centre, an all timber, high-ceiling building used to house the Maori carvers training scheme for teenage boys from 1981 to 1998.

The original building, while not entirely salvageable, was strengthened and used as inspiration for the restoration and further development.
