The Chiefs' Investec Super Rugby season will begin in Taupo, with a pre-season match against the Highlanders.

The match will be at Owen Delany Park on Saturday, February 2 at 3pm.

It will be the first hit-out of the year for the Super 15 champions, with their season starting on February 22 against the same team.

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said they had scheduled the game in Taupo to include the entire region.

"It is important to the Chiefs' family to remain connected to our community and there is no better way to do this than to play around our region."

In preparation for the game the Chiefs will participate in a coaching clinic which the public can watch or collect autographs from.

More details on the time and venue for the clinic will be confirmed in the new year.

Picnics are encouraged during the afternoon game, but alcohol and commercial food such as takeaways will not be allowed in.

Pukekohe and Tauranga will also be used for a one-off home game during the season.

Prices for Taupo's match start at $15 for general admission with children under 14 free.
