Researchers’ road show on cancer
People and their families who have been affected by cancer are invited to visit a road show event in Tauranga tomorrow, where they will can discover what New Zealand's world-renowned health researchers are doing for their fellow Kiwis.
Experts from The University of Auckland, in tandem with those from the University of Otago, will hold a health research showcase tomorrow starting at 5pm at Trinity Wharf on Dive Crescent and members of the public are welcome to attend.
As well as speakers from research units located at the universities, 'Today's research: Tomorrow's Health' will include a presentation by Professor Bill Denny, co-director of the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre and a principal investigator in the Maurice Wilkins Centre at The University of Auckland.
Professor Denny is a past-president of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and the New Zealand Society for Oncology. As well as a Rutherford Medal of the Royal Society of New Zealand, he has been awarded the Adrien Albert Medal of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, the Albert Lectureship of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the NZ Bio New Zealand Biotechnologist of the Year.
Launched by Health Minister Hon Tony Ryall earlier this year, the road show's visit to Tauranga is the first of several events around the country. Its aim is to raise awareness amongst the public about the value of investment in health research in this country, and the effect the research has on the lives of New Zealanders and the economy in general.
