A tourist who slipped and broke her ankle while walking around Mauao yesterday was the subject of a combined rescue effort involving St John ambulance paramedics, firefighters and surf lifesavers.

The 58-year-old woman, from Invercargill, was with family when she slipped on gravel about half way around the Mount and fractured her ankle, Mount Maunganui advanced paramedic Steve Pasquali said.

The Mount Maunganui fire brigade helped carry the woman who was placed in a Stokes Basket attached to a Mount Maunganui Surf Lifesaving Club quad bike.

Mr Pasquali said it took about an hour to bring the woman back to the front of Mount Mauao, where an ambulance waited to take her to Tauranga Hospital.

"We got her in the ambulance just before it rained, and it was a big downpour of rain."
