Steady rain on Saturday did not hinder the building of a community garden in Mount Maunganui, using timber salvaged from the Rena.

Members of the Lions Club of Mount Maunganui and volunteers spent the day constructing 36 raised plots in the May St Reserve, that will soon grow fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Lions Club vice-president and chairman of the gardening sub-committee, Brian Dey, was one of about 30 volunteers that worked through the rain to help build the garden plots. The recycled timber used came from the stranded cargo ship Rena. It was warped and of poor quality, but Mr Dey said with a few nails and some elbow grease, volunteers managed to use the timber to their advantage.

The plots, which measure about 6sq/m, can be rented for $20 a month or $200 a year.

Mr Dey said the community garden initiative was hugely supported by the Mount Maunganui community and would greatly enhance community spirit.

The charitable organisation has a licence to occupy the space for the next three years.

"This is a way for the community to get together and meet new people and share knowledge, time and friendship."

If you would like to rent a garden plot, please phone Mr Dey on (07) 575 8661. Genevieve Helliwell
