Firefighters extinguished a raging car fire where flames were coming out of the bonnet of a parked car in Mount Maunganui.

Officers from Mount Maunganui fire station were called to Adams Ave at 2.10pm and found a raging fire under the bonnet of a red hatchback.

The car was parked outside Oceanside Resort, between the Hot Pools and the Surf Club.

``It was full on flames under the bonnet,'' he said.

``It had almost burnt through the firewall and into the car itself.''

Firefighters were at the scene for about 20 minutes.

The spokesperson said the cause of the fire was unknown, as the damage under the bonnet of the car was so severe.
