Police have swarmed into central Tauranga and are questioning two teenagers.

About half a dozen police officers gathered on The Strand, behind Devonport Towers about 11am today.

Police searched the car of two young men.

Other officers were seen walking along the train tracks and looking in the bushes.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said officers were "tipping out a car''.

"We're searching it ... because they're suspicious-looking characters and that's what we do.''
