Police are searching for a female driver who hit a Tauranga Intermediate School student near Fraser Cove this morning.

The woman was driving a white sedan northbound on Fraser Street around 8.15am.

Tauranga police said the student crossed the road against the light in front of the vehicle, landed on the bonnet of the car then ran off towards the school.

Head of road policing in the Western Bay, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the student crossed the road against the lights in front of the vehicle.

He said the student and the car collided, the student landed on the bonnet of the car then ran off towards the school.

The female driver did not stop but continued along Fraser St, toward Tauranga City Centre.

Mr Campion said it was fortunate the child wasn't injured.

Police would like to speak with the driver of the vehicle to confirm what happened.
