Police said that too many thieves are being given early Christmas presents in the Western Bay of Plenty as the result of vehicles, houses and garages being left insecure and valuables lying in full view.

Despite appeals through the media in recent weeks to 'Lock it, Stash it, Carry it' the increase in thefts from vehicles and burglaries are continuing.

Inspector Clifford Paxton, Area Commander of Western Bay of Plenty said: "It's the age old adage that prevention is better than cure and the best prevention in this case is removing the temptation. Thieves look for easy targets and even a few coins lying in the centre consul or an open window can be enough to motivate a villain."

"We can make a dent in this trend but we really need owners to work with us by taking a few simple steps to protect their own property."

Western Bay of Plenty Police in consultation with Tauranga Safer Cities have developed an innovative 3D brochure which lists ways people can protect their property in vehicles.

However the problem has also spread to insecure residential houses.

Police will continue to target vulnerable streets and locations and will be utilising their volunteer partners, Community Patrols and Neighbourhood Support to assist.

Other simple advice includes:

  • always lock your vehicles, houses and garages
  • don't leave valuables visible, stash them in the boot or carry them with you
  • Set vehicle and house alarms
  • never leave keys in the ignition - lots of vehicles are stolen from driveways and garages
  • ensure windows are secure
  • avoid parking in isolated areas - busy areas are less vulnerable
  • choose well lit areas at night
  • fit tamper proof screws to number plates
