Pleased to mako your acquaintance
Alastair Blair knows a thing or two about shark encounters.
The keen fisherman made news in late 2010 when he took pictures from his boat of a great white shark in Tauranga Harbour.
Last week, Mr Blair got photos of a mako shark which paid him a visit while he and a friend were fishing near Karewa Island.
"We had burley out the back and [it] just sort of came in. We were feeding it." Mr Blair said it had been a long time since he last saw a mako shark but he had not encountered one that hung around the boat like this one.
Mako sharks made headlines in New Zealand this week after a tagged shark named Carol was tracked in a 13,300km migration around New Zealand and Fiji.
The Niwa landmark study tagged the 1.8m shark in the Bay of Islands six months ago. So far, Carol has travelled an average of 60km per day and exceeded 100km per day on some days.
