Omokoroa fire caused by cigarette

File

A cigarette is thought to be behind a fire that came close to spreading into pine trees at Omokoroa.

Omokoroa volunteer fire chief Ian Blunt said firefighters were called to the property on Youngson Rd about 9.15am yesterday.

A 50m x 5m stack of firewood, placed under pine trees, caught alight.

However, firefighters arrived in time to prevent the fire spreading, Mr Blunt said.

Fire authorities are yet to determine how a car was gutted by fire in residential Pyes Pa yesterday.

The stationwagon was fully engulfed in flames when Tauranga firefighters arrived at Condor Dr at 4am.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
