Olympic medalist Peter Burling went back to where it all began with a visit to his old primary school today.

The 21-year-old, who won silver in the men's sailing the Olympic men's 49er race, popped in to Welcome Bay School to chat to the kids, show them his silver medal and talk about his Olympic experience.

He learnt to sail when he was at the school and today he returned to inspire the next generation.

Burling said his medal had its fair share of dents from sharing the excitement of his success with others.

"It's been pretty cool that I can share it with them, " he told the Bay of Plenty Times.

Burling and his sailing partner Blair Tuke, were awarded New Zealand's 100th medal at the Olympic Games.
