Neighbours were alerted to the plight of a man trapped in his crashed car when they were woken by a horn honking and a man yelling out for help.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said a couple of residents of Joyce Rd, Pyes Pa called police after hearing the man's cries about 3.30am this morning.

Emergency services arrived to find that a man had crashed his van into a tree.

"When police arrived they found a man trapped by his legs in a vehicle," Mr Campion said.

Firefighters were required to free the 33-year-old man from his van.

A St John spokesperson said the man was then transported to Tauranga Hospital with leg injuries.
