Fire fighters and police were called to a car fire on Taumata Rd in Pyes Pa.

Mystery surrounds a large car fire in rural Pyes Pa.

Emergency Services were called to the blaze on Taumata Rd about 7.30pm tonight.

A Nissan Mistral had caught fire and was completely burnt out.

Greerton fire brigade station officer Paul van Kol said they saw a column of smoke as they approached the scene.

"We were pleased it didn't get into the dry grass and down the banks and away into the hills," he said.

Constable Ian Sadler said the callout was for a car which had hit a bank and caught fire but it appeared that was no the case.

The car did not appear to have crashed and the owners were no where to be seen, he said.

Mr Sadler had not been able to make direct contact with the owner to establish if the car had been stolen or not.

Residents of a nearby house saw the blaze and called the fire brigade.
