Four people are in Tauranga Hospital with minor to serious injuries after a car accident in rural Tauranga last night.

Emergency services including multiple ambulances were called to State Highway 2 at Pongakawa just after 6pm last night after a two-car accident.

St John Mount Maunganui operations team manager Gary Bishell said three people involved in the accident suffered minor injuries and were taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance.

He said a female driver of one of the vehicles suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"It appeared the two cars were going the same way and someone pulled out to overtake. I don't know what exactly happened but one car was t-boned and hit directly on its side.

"It was a local girl, the driver, she took the impact on the drivers side. She had serious pelvis injuries."

Ambulances from Tauranga, Te Puke and Mount Maunganui attended the accident.
