Tauranga's Cowling brothers continued their run of South Island speedway success in Dunedin on Saturday night.

With his car repaired after crashing out of the lead in the final of the NZ Saloon Car Champs at Cromwell the previous weekend, Chris Cowling gained special satisfaction by driving to victory in the NZ Saloon Car Grand Prix at the Beachlands track in Dunedin and older brother Steve followed up his runner-up finish in the NZ title with a third placing at the GP.

"Daryl Ainsley [Cromwell] was on grid one and Steve qualified second with me on grid three," said Chris Cowling. "They got away from me by about the length of the straight but there was a caution about halfway which gave me a chance to rethink things a bit.

"When the race restarted I changed to work the bottom of the track.

"I battled with Steve for two or three laps and then got past him," he said.

Whitianga's Phil Towgood came through late in the race to finish second ahead of Steve Cowling while Aucklander Nigel Ross was fourth.

Tauranga racer Brent McClymont moved forward from a grid nine starting position, following brake and set-up problems in the heat races, to finish fifth.
