More than $250,000 was raised for the SPCA in its annual Cupcake Day fundraiser.

Tens of thousands of cupcakes were baked, decorated and sold in the organisation's fourth annual fundraising event.

SPCA national chief executive Robyn Kippenberger was blown away with the amount raised, which was more than last years' $230,000.

"Animals will benefit throughout New Zealand from the amazing contributions of Cupcake Cooks,'' she said.

"I'm sure I speak for all SPCA's and the animals they care for when I thank all who baked, sold and bought cupcakes.''

Honourable titles were up for grabs, with Auckland woman Kerry Morris taking out the title of Most Creative Cupcake.

Judge Emily Taylor of Chelsea NZ's Hottest Home Baker said picking Most Creative Cupcake winner was challenging.

"I was overwhelmed by the quality and choice of entries. It was a hard decision and in the end I chose the winning entry because of Kerry's clever, edible interpretation of the Cupcake Day logo.''

Auckland woman Cheryl Derrick from Auckland won the award for the most money raised by an individual, with $1534.30.

Gladstone Primary in Auckland suburb of Mt Albert won the award for the most money raised by a g and the most cupcakes baked by a group, with $3033.90 and 3000 cupcakes.

The award for the most cupcakes baked by an individual went to Clare Parkinson of Napier, with 1005 cupcakes.
