A man who sparked an armed police call out after returning to a Merivale party with an air rifle was arrested early this morning.

The 23-year-old unemployed Tauranga man was at the Oxford St party last night when he became involved in a confrontation with other guests over a missing wallet.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said the man then left the party but returned later carrying an air rifle.

No shots were fired and the man left a short time later.

Armed police responded and arrested the man about 4am.

He was charged with presenting a firearm and possession of a firearm without lawful purpose.

The man was released on bail but expected to appear in the Tauranga District Court on Friday, April 01.
