Man hit by car while walking on road

A pedestrian suffered a broken arm and leg when he was hit by a car on Te Puna Station Rd on Saturday.

St John operations team manager Gary Bishell said the 33-year-old Te Puna man was struck after darkness had set in at 6pm. He was walking along the side of the road.

The man, who also suffered multiple grazes in the accident, was in a stable condition in the orthopaedic ward at Tauranga Hospital this morning.

The accident occurred about 150 metres before the road starts to climb up to Te Puna. It was the second accident in five weeks along this stretch of road.

The previous accident involved a car ending up in a ditch after side-swiping another vehicle. The driver, who was twice over the legal alcohol limit, "ran away" but was apprehended by police soon after.

Earlier in the day, at 4.30pm, two ambulances from Mount Maunganui St John were called to a mountain bike track on Reid Road, off Welcome Bay Road.

A 22-year-old Taranaki man had fallen off his bike and landed heavily on his face, suffering moderate head injuries.

Mr Bishell said the rider was saved from more serious injury thanks to the helmet he was wearing.

The helmet was badly cracked in the accident.

A motorcycle crash at 8pm ended a busy few hours of accidents for St John paramedics on Saturday.

A Tauranga ambulance was dispatched to the scene of the accident on Oropi Gorge Rd.

The out-of-town rider, aged in his 50s, suffered minor injuries and was treated and discharged from Tauranga Hospital.
