Man critical after near drowning in Whangamata

A 42-year-old male surfer was flown to Waikato Hospital by the Auckland Westpac Helicopter in a critical condition after a near drowning in Whangamata this afternoon.

St John Thames operations manager Pauline Davison confirmed the callout was to a near-drowning.

EARLIER:

A man is in a critical condition after a near drowning in the Coromandel.

Ambulance crews are treating the man and Auckland Westpac Helicopter was on its way to the incident.

It took place in Whangamata, on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, just before 1.30pm said a St John northern communications spokeswoman.

Police are also at the scene.
