Accused of exchange student assault in court

A Mount Maunganui man accused of assaulting a 16-year-old foreign exchange student in a Tauranga bar will stand trial next year.

Max Roberts, 20, appeared in the Tauranga District Court for a trial callover today.

The trial is scheduled to begin on June 27.

Roberts is charged with one count of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police allege the victim, understood to be an exchange student from Brazil, was assaulted in the early hours of November 27, and treated at Tauranga Hospital for serious injuries to his face.

Roberts was remanded on bail until the trial.
