Local riders a cut above rest

Wet and windy weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands who flocked to Omokoroa No 1 School's ninth annual Ride-on Mower Day fundraiser.

The school hosted the National Lawnmower Racing Finals series for the second year yesterday, with more than 30 racers from across New Zealand competing.

Among the local racers was Adam Pendred, president of the Bay of Plenty Lawnmower Racing Club, and owner of lawnmower business, Garden Forest Marine in Greerton.

Mr Pendred said he was rapt to retain his title as national champion in class two and to come second equal in the Omokoroa champs trophy race, competing in the same class.

Local, Tor Cunningham, also retained his national title in class one and was runner-up to Waikato's Campbell Witherford in the class one Omokoroa Champs trophy race.

Mr Pendred said the racing was "fast and furious."

"Because of the rain during the morning the race track was a bit slippery and the racing extra challenging, but it was still great fun, and that's what it's all about," he said.

The annual Omokoroa No 1 School Ride-On Mower Day is well-known throughout New Zealand, and even draws enthusiasts from the South Island.

Funds raised will go towards the new five-lane 25m school pool.

Bronwyn Carter said the exact amount raised had yet to be determined.

"It was an awesome effort by everyone involved in making the day a huge success, including the Year 6 kids who pulled together to run their own fundraising stalls. They did an amazing job," she said.
