Tauranga's Lions host fundraising walk for Cancer Society

Tauranga's 12 Lions Clubs are coming together to organise one of the Bay's largest fundraising events.

The clubs are hoping to raise more than $100,000 for the Cancer Society Lions Lodge by hosting a charity exercise event.

Four walking tracks around Tauranga have been selected with assistance from the Tauranga City Council, as venues for walkers or runners for the event on May 19.

Welcome Bay Lions Club's Ray Smith said the aim was to raise as much money as possible for the Cancer Society Lions Lodge in one day.

The Hamilton lodge offers accommodation to cancer patients.

"Our family and friends that need this treatment simply need our support at a time when they are in real need."

Funds will be raised by entry fees and participants completing a sponsored walk or run around one of the selected walkways.

The Lions have been awarded a $1000 grant by Tauranga City Council, which will go towards costs.

Tauranga city Mayor Stuart Crosby backed the event.

"It's a wonderful cause that Lions have been supporting for many years and I am supporting the event and look forward to a good number of people participating in it."

This is the first time all the local Lions Clubs have come together for a single project.
