Lifeguards are warning swimmers to be careful of a major rip in front of Omanu Surf Club.

Two guards using tubes rescued a man, aged in his 50s, from the rip on Saturday.

The man did not need medical attention.

The rip formed in front of the clubhouse late last week and was likely to stay for some time.

It was important for swimmers to stay between the flags during weekend patrols, a club spokesman said.
