A group of six kohanga reo children struggled to carry their generous donation through the door at The Daily Post.

Rotorua's Te Kohanga Reo Ki Rotokawa donated 87 cans of food, one packet of rice risotto and four Christmas-wrapped boxes to The Daily Post Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army foodbank yesterday.

Rotokawa supervisor Tiria Shaw said the children had been learning about paying it forward and had chosen the appeal as their school fundraiser.

"Our topic is pay it forward. So when we saw [the Christmas appeal] we decided to get right behind it. Parents have been bringing in all the cans, I'm not actually sure how many we collected in the end," she said.

Ms Shaw said they had 26 children at the kohanga reo, all of whom had joined in the appeal.

She said as part of the learning on pay it forward, they had also raised goods for the Rotorua Pink Walk, held last month.

Meanwhile, donations to The Daily Post Christmas Appeal for the Salvation Army foodbank can be made at our Hinemoa St office between 8am and 5pm on weekdays. People can donate money or non-perishable food.

Food donations can also be made at the Salvation Army's Community Ministries at Community House on Haupapa St.
