Freedom campers who do not follow the new rules instituted by the Department of Conservation (DoC) face a $200 instant fine.

DoC have clarified rules surrounding freedom camping on conservation land.

Under the Freedom Camping Act, camping is prohibited in areas clearly identified with relevant signage.

Other marked sites will be available for selfcontained campervans to stay overnight.

Information identifying where camping is prohibited and where it is restricted to self contained vehicles are on the DoC website: www.doc.govt.nz/freedomcamping.

Copies copies of notices are available to view at all Conservancy and area offices, and DoC visitor centres.
