An injured hunter had to be airlifted to hospital.

The Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called about 9.30am this morning to the Huiarau Range southeast of Minginui.

Pilot Art Kowalski said the 38-year-old Rotorua man had rolled his ankle and was unable to walk out from the remote Depatment of Conservation hut.

Other members of the man's hunting party walked out of the heavy bush and notified rescue services.

A St John advanced paramedic was flown in with the helicopter to treat the man on scene before he was taken to Rotorua Hospital.
